The Proposal

This is an email I sent out to my beloved girl friends soon after the engagement. I think it really captured how I felt perfectly then. So here goes.

" Hey guys - some of you may have heard that Calvin popped the question :) but if you haven't I assure you it's not because I was playing favorites but its probably because you didn't wish me happy birthday. Hah! So anyways yeah I am engaged! OMG, I still can't believe it happened cuz I wasn't expecting it at all. I mean we've been together for just a year! Noone expects a proposal so soon, right???

So here is the low-down of what happened. I was in the office, working my ass off on my birthday. There were lots of painful trades, so i only managed to leave the office at 6.30pm. After which I made my way to Marina Bay Sands where Calvin booked us a room for the night for my birthday. By some a stroke of luck, they didn't have the room that we booked so they upgraded us to a suite which was fantastic. The night was off to a good start.

We changed and proceeded to dinner at one of the restaurants at MBS. Food was good, nothing spectacular but the view of the Singapore skyline was phenomenal. Hong Kong has a better skyline I must say, if only they do something about the pollution. Anyway i digress... So we were having a good time at dinner, but halfway through dinner the electricity got cut off. No no, it wasn't planned by Calvin though I kinda wish it was now as it would have made a better proposal story. Haha. So the whole tower was blacked out (there are 3 towers in MBS) ! Can you believe it? It made it to the papers today, check it out. And apparently it never happened before, twas my lucky day :)

So the kitchen was down and we were waiting for dessert. I suggested going elsewhere for dessert but he was quite adamant on staying (in hindset we couldn't have gone anywhere else because the lift wasn't working and we were all the way up at the skypark, duh). Instead, we took a walk outside and it was pretty nice so I wasn't complaining. Lights came back after a while, and we went back to our table for food.

So turned out he arranged for the restaurant staff to have a little dance and song for my birthday. They came over with our dessert, and instead of candles I had sparklers and they sang me a birthday song complete with harmonies. The whole restaurant was staring and I literally was gonna die of embarrassment. Haha after the little commotion was over, I asked if he could embarrass me any further. And he said yes, pulled out a ring, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.

I was really surprised and was literally stunned for a couple of seconds. Calvin must be wondering if I was gonna say no. Haha I said yes of course. It was quite funny after, cuz his hands were still shaking as he was so nervous about the whole thing. And he said he chose the restaurant so that he could jump down if i were to say no, lol. That's about it. We have been busy talking to our parents etc. but obviously haven't selected any date yet. It's still news to me and I'm gonna let it sink slowly and enjoy the experience of being engaged b4 planning for the wedding (Omigosh, a wedding!?!).

Well this is it, gals. I'm gonna be Mrs Chan."
